Food fulfils several functions at once.

Food supplies energy, building materials, micronutrients and water. It also contributes to satiety, habits, pleasure and social life.

The useful question is not to find a universal diet, but to understand the functions of food, the substitutions actually being made and the constraints of everyday life before changing what matters.

A coherent diet links sufficiency, balance, moderation and diversity while taking needs, substitutions, context and the real capacity to sustain chosen practices into account.

What does the body actually need — and what organisation can provide it sustainably?

Food advice becomes contradictory when different questions are treated as though they were one: energy balance, nutrient adequacy, performance, satiety, clinical problems, culture and everyday feasibility do not answer the same problem.

01 · Multiple functions

Eating fulfils several functions.

Food provides energy, construction materials, essential nutrients and water. Reducing nutrition to only one of these functions quickly creates contradictory advice.

A useful diet must therefore be read as a system: what the body receives, what it can use or store, what it expends, and what remains sustainable in real life.

Feeding an organism means neither counting only calories nor pretending energy does not exist.

02 · Energy

Energy matters without summarising food quality.

A calorie measures a quantity of energy. It helps reason about intake and reserves, but by itself it says nothing about protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals, water, physical structure or satiety.

Two foods with the same energy content are therefore not interchangeable. Conversely, claiming that calories never matter erases a real physical constraint.

03 · Energy balance

The principle is simple; the living system is dynamic.

Over time, body reserves depend on the relation between energy received and expended. But neither intake nor expenditure is constant: activity, body mass, appetite, food structure and biological adaptation interact.

The energy relation is simple in principle and complex in real operation. It therefore justifies neither a morality of body weight nor the promise that one isolated calculation perfectly describes a person.

04 · General architecture

Sufficiency, balance, moderation and diversity.

The corpus retains these four broad principles because they describe an eating architecture better than the search for a perfect food or a single prohibition.

Exact composition varies with age, activity, cultural context, available foods and habits. A population-level recommendation is therefore not automatically an individual prescription.

05 · Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are not one homogeneous category.

Simple sugars, starches and fibres belong to the same broad family but arrive in very different food contexts. Legumes, refined bread and sugary drinks differ by structure, fibre and accompanying nutrients.

Glycaemic index can inform one property, but it does not summarise the quality of a food or of a complete meal.

06 · Protein

Protein provides materials — not the whole construction signal.

Protein supplies amino acids needed for many body structures and functions. Reference needs and training-related objectives do not answer the same question.

More is not indefinitely better. For muscle in particular, protein does not replace mechanical stimulus, recovery or repeated effort.

07 · Fats

Fats are energy-dense and biologically necessary.

They participate in membranes, energy storage, transport of some vitamins and several signalling pathways. Their energy density does not make them undesirable nutrients.

The nutritional question also concerns fat quality and what replaces what is reduced. A substitution is not neutral.

08 · Micronutrients

An essential nutrient is not something to maximise.

Vitamins, minerals, sodium, potassium and iron are necessary for important functions. Deficiency can be harmful, but the existence of a need does not mean that high doses produce more health.

This distinction matters especially for supplements: correcting a documented need is not the same thing as systematically adding a dose because a nutrient is described as “good”.

09 · Fibre and microbiome

Avoid turning one concept into a magic explanation.

Fibres include compounds with different properties and may affect transit, stool water and colonic fermentation. Their usefulness does not mean that maximising fibre is appropriate for everyone.

The microbiome participates in many processes, but the corpus refuses to make it a universal explanation. Saying that “everything comes from the gut” exceeds what the material supports.

10 · Context

The food context matters as much as the isolated rule.

Eating exists within a budget, culture, schedule, preferences, cooking skills and actual food availability. A recommendation that is perfect on paper can fail if it cannot be repeated.

The goal is therefore not dietary purity, but an organisation good enough to provide necessary resources without making all of life depend on surveillance of every meal.

11 · Clinical boundary

General nutrition and clinical situations are not the same thing.

General guidance can help structure everyday eating. It does not replace assessment of an allergy, deficiency, digestive disorder, metabolic disease, pregnancy or another particular clinical situation.

When symptoms, disease, treatment or major restriction enter the picture, lifestyle mapping must give way to appropriate diagnosis and professional advice.

Proof-act

Change one function in a way that can actually last.

An improvement becomes more robust when it targets a specific function and a modification that can genuinely be sustained rather than an identity of being a “good eater”. The aim and the observable result should be clear.

A proof-act can be to diversify a recurring meal, add a tolerated fibre source, regularly replace a highly refined option with a more structured one, or make one simple meal reliably available—then observe what actually changes without turning one variation into a universal truth.
